| The most efficient time to use a foliar application is when there is signs of a nutrient deficiency. As well a foliar application will help to produce a better plant stand at the seedling stage along with increased root growth. Some air drills (mid row banders, side band, and paired row) place the fertilizer away from the seed so that higher rates of fertilizer can be used safely. Along with that, there will be a short time that the plant will have no fertilizer until the roots grow towards the fertilizer band. Deficiencies can show up at this time, therefore a foliar application when the plant has emerged from the soil can clear up any of the deficiencies. Other air drills (single shoot) place the fertilizer with the seed, limiting the amount of fertilizer that can be safely place with the seed. A foliar application can add the fertilizer needed to keep the crop healthy and give it that boost to grow big yields. Foliar applications are common after seeding when the plants have emerged from the soil, but also can be applied through out the growing season as needed. |
